An editorial publication designed around the work and visual language of photographer Nan Goldin, exploring themes of intimacy, vulnerability, identity, and memory through expressive print design. The project combines large-scale imagery, experimental typography, and cinematic pacing to create an immersive reading experience that reflects the emotional intensity of Goldin’s photography.
Contrasting light and dark visual treatments were used throughout the layouts to mirror the dualities present in her work, while carefully structured grids and negative space maintain clarity and readability.
The publication was developed across both print and digital formats, allowing for an expanded interactive experience through motion, sound, and layered media. The final outcome balances editorial structure with emotional storytelling, creating a publication that feels both visually refined and deeply personal.
The process for creating this book included interpreting her art and researching her works to capture the essence of the artist throughout the project. Challenges included representing all the aspects of Nan Goldin’s life while keeping a cohesive look. This was solved by separating the book into two distinct sections, high and low. Showing her life in two different lights allowed for a better understanding of her experiences and how the artwork follows her personal journey.
Another challenge was finding a typeface that matches the photography and mood as well as contrasting the art’s boldness. I chose to use a custom typeface generated for this project, alluding to the roughness and challenges Nan’s life had. To compliment this, a more minimal font was used for the body text.
